A Few of My Favorite Things…

There’s something about being on the cusp of Fall and entering into a new holiday season that reminds me of all the little things that I try so hard not to take for granted. It’s the little things that make a terrible day better or remind me of the way God is working in my life. When my life gets crazy, I try to take moments to breathe and to be thankful for what I have. Aside from the cooler, crisp air on the horizon and breaking out the fluffy sweaters and boots that are so wonderful this time of year, here are a few of my favorite things no matter what season I’m in:

  1. Long conversations on the phone with my mom.


I could talk to my mom for hours. There’s something about how she talks to me, and how her words always resonate with me. When things are overwhelming or stressful in my life, my mom (and my husband) are the only ones who can talk me down off the ledge and help me process the events in my life in a rational way. I cope through talking, and my mom is the first person I think of whenever anything is going on in my life. I love that we share such a special bond. I wouldn’t change it for the world.

2. Weekends naps


Honestly, naps are the best. There’s really not much more to say than that. Lately, work has been crazy, and I find it difficult to sleep during the week when I have so many things on my mind. By the time Friday rolls around, I am exhausted. Naps should never replace a healthy sleep schedule during the week, but there’s plenty of research that shows napping on the weekends is quite healthy. I welcome the one or two hour naps I can slide into weekend plans, and with the cooler Fall air, napping to fresh air circulating through our home makes the experience that much better.

3. Working Out

Nothing combats stress like sweat-filled workout sessions. I started going to the gym regularly about 3 years ago, and now I can’t imagine life with my stress-busting workouts. I feel so much stronger and healthier physically, and it helps me release stress instead of holding onto to it. I’m slowly working my way up to heavier weights, and I’ve seen noticeable increases in my endurance level and muscle tone. There’s nothing better.

4. Utilizing my creativity

I LOVE to create things, and plan things for others. I recently volunteered to put together a newsletter for the Children’s Ministry at my church, and I find so much joy in putting it together. I love thinking about the content to put into it, the layout, and the graphics. But most of all, I love that I’m helping parents stay in the loop with what their children are learning in Sunday School. I discovered my love of creating and planning a few years ago when I planned a huge trip to Costa Rica with several friends. The trip went off without a single hiccup, and although I worked tirelessly on the plans, my friends loved the end result, which made everything worth it.

For me, life is about growing in my faith and keeping God at the forefront of everything I do. It’s the little things that make it that much sweeter.
