Well, hello electro-pop. Not only is this song catchy and beautiful—Lights’s entire album, “Siberia,” is catchy and beautiful. This song in particular is an easy one to have on repeat constantly. She sums up her feelings in an esoteric, catchy song with light bass beats and repetitive chorus. I’m in love with it. I generally live and breathe 90’s rock and pop-rock, but I also have a soft-spot for techno (thanks, Mom!), and dubstep. However, there is one genre I can’t seem to get into–country, which is odd considering I have lots of friends that love this genre, and I was born and raised in the dirty south.
“Toes” strikes a cord with me. Lights has explained that the song is about a person she finds to be completely intriguing and is waiting for him to make a move. Luckily, my husband made his move almost 9 years ago, but I still find him captivating even to this day.
The song sort of reminds me of the night I met my husband. I was 17 years-old and my husband was 18. I was at an island party with my then-boyfriend, and, ironically, I did not want to be there. This was a very weird period in my life–my relationship with my then-boyfriend was crumbling around me, and I was in a really bad place emotionally. Boy, am I ever glad I decided to go. My husband had had a few beers, and I was prancing around in my bathing suit. Ah, to live carefree again, right? I sat next to him on a log, and we chatted the entire night. Knowing my husband now, I’m pretty sure the beer is what got him to talk–he’s normally very quiet. There was something about him–I didn’t know at that moment if it was just the flicker of fire in his green eyes from the bonfire, or if it was love at first sight. I like to think it was the latter. I saw hope in his eyes that night. He has such a gentle demeanor that he has never, ever lost while we were growing up together. But, one thing is for sure, my husband always keeps me on my toes and no matter what happens in our lives I know that I can always count on him and that he will always support me. That’s the best kind of love.
As for some background on Lights herself: She was born Valerie Anne Poxleitner, but legally changed her name to Lights later. She’s also Canadian and has her own spunk. I included her in the post I wrote a few days ago, and mentioned that she has several tattoos, including a large one on her back of a monster hand that looks like its coming out of her arm-pit, and pushing down on a woman. It reminds me a lot of the Hulk for some reason. In any event, I like that she is true to herself, and I adore the electro-pop style she is going for.
